Small team. High agency.

Sumeru is building the commerce intelligence runtime — the platform underneath the dashboard, the attribution under the chart, the automation behind the rule. We hire engineers who can read a system and operators who think like engineers. Deep technical work; no thin abstractions.

Why Sumeru

Four ideas that shape the work.

If two or more sound right to you, the rest of the page is worth reading.

Ownership

End-to-end, not hand-off

You don't ship code to a queue and walk away. You write the changelog. You hop on the support call. You read the audit log when something breaks. The roundtrip from issue to fix to docs is the same person.

Craft

The boring infrastructure is the leverage

Throttle helpers, idempotency keys, audit primitives — before the feature on top. We invest in base layers because they compound. Engineers who care about the second derivative of code quality fit here.

Direction

Written before spoken

Decisions live in RFCs, not Slack threads. The audit-trail principle applies to engineering decisions too. Documents are how distributed teams stay aligned without endless meetings.

Trust

Optimize for the undo path

If a system can be undone, you can move faster. If it can't, you have to move slowly. We design for reversibility — snapshots, dry-runs, soft deletes — so engineers can take real risks.

Open roles

Filter by team. If you don't see your role but think you'd fit, write us anyway.

Type
Full-time

Own end-to-end design + delivery of new engines on the Sumeru runtime. You'll touch the event bus, the BullMQ worker layer, the cost-aware throttle helpers, and the audit-log substrate. Recent shipping example: the AttributionFlow refactor that took P95 from 4 minutes to 42 seconds.

What we're looking for

  • ·5+ years building event-driven systems at scale
  • ·Production experience with TypeScript + Node + Postgres + Redis
  • ·Strong opinion on idempotency, retry, dead-letter handling
  • ·Has written a public talk, blog post, or RFC you can point us to

Full-time

Lead the 13-handler Automation Engine. You'll add new action handlers (we have a backlog), evolve the snapshot+undo contract, and own the 7-day mandatory dry-run gate. Cross-team work with the Decision Engine team on event semantics.

What we're looking for

  • ·Has shipped automation primitives at production scale
  • ·Comfortable owning safety properties (snapshot, undo, audit) end-to-end
  • ·Reads commerce-platform APIs critically (Shopify, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok)
  • ·Bias toward writing the integration test before the feature

Full-time

First technical hire on the customer side. You'll walk enterprise prospects through the architecture during evaluation, design custom integrations for agencies and headless deployments, and feed product requirements back into the runtime team. Half engineering, half pre-sales.

What we're looking for

  • ·Shopify Plus expert — or willing to become one fast
  • ·Has held a similar role at a mid-stage commerce-infra company
  • ·Comfortable writing the OpenAPI spec, the webhook example, the code sample, the architecture diagram — in one pre-sales call
  • ·Has opinions on attribution methodology and isn't afraid to share them

Own the positioning, the messaging, the launch playbook. You'll work with engineering directly on what to write about and how to explain it. Strong opinions about the 'AI-native commerce' category we're shaping — and able to defend them on Twitter and in long-form.

What we're looking for

  • ·5+ years marketing technical B2B SaaS products
  • ·Has launched a category-shaping product (or wishes they had)
  • ·Can write a 1,500-word essay and a 12-word headline with equal skill
  • ·Reads competitor docs as carefully as they read ours

Full-time

One designer. The entire system. You own the brand (Vertex mark, type system, illustrative direction), the marketing site (which you're reading), and the product UI (which we built but isn't great yet). High-agency role; you're shaping the visual identity of the company.

What we're looking for

  • ·Has done both brand + product design at a venture-backed startup
  • ·Comfortable with Figma + a real codebase (you don't need to push code, but you read it)
  • ·Strong typography taste; quiet visual confidence
  • ·Has shipped at least one identity system you'd point us to

Compensation & benefits

What you get.

Specific, in writing. Vague comp is a red flag — we don't do it.

Top-of-band cash

Top-of-band cash

Salaries benchmark to top-of-band for your role in your region. We don't ask for current salary; we offer based on the role. Bands published internally; no negotiation theatre.

Meaningful equity

Meaningful equity

Real early-stage options on a standard 4-year vest with 1-year cliff. We show you the cap-table math during offer. 10-year exercise window — you keep what you earned even if you leave.

Time off that's used

Time off that's used

Five weeks paid + national holidays. Plus a yearly 1-week company shutdown so nobody has to feel guilty about being away. We track usage and nudge people who aren't taking enough.

Health

Health, fully covered

Premiums covered 100% for you and dependents in supported regions. Mental health stipend on top — including therapy and coaching, no proof-of-need required.

Learning budget

Learning budget

$2,500/year for books, courses, conferences, paid newsletters — anything that makes you better at the work. Approval is a single Slack message.

The tools you need

The tools you need

Top-spec MacBook Pro or Linux laptop, 4K monitor, mechanical keyboard, ergonomic chair. Replace any of it on a 3-year cycle. The constraint is 'is it useful,' not 'did we line-item this.'

How we work together

A distributed team that acts like a team.

Remote-first, async-by-default

We don't have an HQ. Everyone is remote. Core overlap hours are 4 daily in UTC ±5, but most work happens async. Pull requests, RFC docs, recorded walkthroughs — written communication is the default.

Small team, deep work

We're under 20 people and don't plan to scale headcount fast. Every role has real surface area. There is no 'manager of 6 ICs who has 1:1s all day' — leads contribute code or strategy directly.

Quarterly off-sites

Once a quarter we get the company together for a week — usually in Europe or India. All-hands, deep planning, meals, no laptops after 6pm. Flights + hotel covered. It's how a small distributed team stays a team.

Hiring process

What to expect.

No 12-hour take-home. No 6-round panels. We respect your time and tell you where you stand.

30-minute first call

A two-way conversation. We learn about your background and what you're looking for. You learn about Sumeru and what we're building. Honest, no surprises.

03 · Work

90-minute paid exercise

A realistic problem from the actual codebase — paid at consulting rate, regardless of outcome. We discuss your approach in a follow-up; we want to see how you think, not test trivia.

04 · Meet

Team call + offer

Talk with two other people you'd work with. Reference check. Offer within 5 business days of the final call. No black-box silence. Yes or no — both come with feedback.

Candidate FAQ

What people usually ask.

Do you sponsor visas?

Not yet — we're a small team without legal infrastructure for sponsorship in any single country. We hire on contractor agreements (via Deel/Remote.com) in 60+ countries and contribute local employer taxes where required.

What's the equity range for a senior engineer?

Between 0.4% and 1.2% depending on level and timing. We show every candidate the cap table and explain dilution math during offer. The strike price is set at the most recent 409A valuation.

What hours do I need to be online?

Four-hour overlap with UTC ±5 (roughly 12:00–16:00 UTC). The rest of your day is yours. Some people start at 6am, some at 2pm — that's your call. We measure outputs, not hours.

How long is the hiring process?

Two to three weeks from first email to offer. Four conversations total, plus a 90-minute paid exercise. We commit to a yes/no within 5 business days of the final call — even a no comes with feedback.

Is there a parental leave policy?

16 weeks paid for primary caregivers, 8 weeks for non-primary. No 'use it or lose it' games. You also get a graduated return-to-work option — half-time for two weeks before going full speed.

What if I don't see a role that fits?

Write us anyway. We hire generalists often — the right person tends to come before the right role. Send a CV and a short note about what you'd want to build, to careers@sumeru.systems.
